The alarming rise in deaths due to pothole-related road accidents in India has become a significant concern, as reported by the government in a recent communication to Parliament. Over the past five years, fatalities linked to potholes have surged by a staggering 53 percent, with a total of 9,438 lives lost nationwide between 2020 and 2024. Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the most affected state, accounting for over 54 percent of these tragic incidents, solidifying its position as the state with the highest road safety challenges. According to data presented by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the year 2021 saw a slight decline in fatalities; however, the numbers have escalated each subsequent year, culminating in a peak of 2,385 deaths in 2024. The annual death toll witnessed a marginal decrease from 1,555 in 2020 to 1,481 in 2021, yet the trend reversed, with fatalities rising annually thereafter. The figures surged to 1,856 in 2022 and continued to climb to 2,161 in 2023 before reaching the alarming peak in 2024. Uttar Pradesh is particularly notorious for its road safety issues, reporting a total of 5,127 deaths attributed to potholes between 2020 and 2024. In a stark illustration of the state’s road safety crisis, 2024 alone recorded 1,369 pothole-related fatalities, accounting for more than half of the national total—a significant increase from 1,320 deaths in 2023 and 1,030 in 2022. Following Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh has also reported concerning statistics, emphasizing the urgent need for road safety reforms and infrastructure improvement across the country. With the rising toll of pothole-related accidents, it is imperative for state authorities and the central government to prioritize road maintenance and implement effective safety measures to prevent further loss of life. The growing fatalities underline the critical need for increased investment in road infrastructure and a renewed focus on road safety initiatives to protect citizens and reduce the devastating impact of pothole-related accidents on Indian roads.
