India has achieved a significant milestone in its power generation capacity, surpassing the impressive 50 GW mark for the period spanning April to January of the current fiscal year 2025-26. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Power, this accomplishment represents the highest capacity addition recorded in a single year, eclipsing the previous record of 34,054 MW established during the fiscal year 2024-25. From April 2025 to January 31, 2026, a remarkable total of 52,537 MW of generation capacity has been added across various energy sources. Notably, renewable energy sources have played a pivotal role in this surge, contributing 39,657 MW to the total capacity. This includes a substantial addition of 34,955 MW from solar power and 4,613 MW from wind power, reflecting India’s commitment to sustainable energy development. The data also indicates that this capacity addition translates to an increase of over 11% in the country’s total installed power generation capacity for the fiscal year. As of January 31, 2026, India’s total installed power generation capacity has reached 520,510.95 MW, with fossil fuel-based capacity accounting for 248,541.62 MW and non-fossil fuel capacity at 271,969.33 MW, which includes both renewable sources and nuclear energy. This achievement underscores India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure and transition towards a more sustainable energy future, aligning with global climate goals while ensuring energy security for its growing population. The strategic focus on renewable energy sources is crucial as India seeks to bolster its renewable energy capacity, aiming for a target of 500 GW by 2030. The remarkable progress made during this fiscal year showcases the effectiveness of government policies and initiatives promoting clean energy adoption, investment in green technologies, and infrastructure development. As India continues to advance its power generation capabilities, it positions itself as a leading player in the global renewable energy landscape, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
