India Surpasses 50 GW Power Generation Capacity Addition in Record-Breaking Year, Driven by Renewables and Solar Growth

India’s power generation capacity has achieved a remarkable milestone, crossing the 50 GW mark for capacity addition from all energy sources during the April to January period of the current fiscal year, according to a report from the Ministry of Power. This achievement represents the highest-ever capacity addition in a single fiscal year, surpassing the previous record of 34,054 MW set during the 2024-25 fiscal year. As of January 31, 2026, a total of 52,537 MW of generation capacity has been added, reflecting the country’s commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure. Notably, renewable energy sources contributed significantly to this growth, with 39,657 MW added from renewables, including an impressive 34,955 MW from solar power and 4,613 MW from wind power. This surge in renewable energy capacity underscores India’s strategic focus on sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, the capacity increase translates to more than an 11% rise in the nation’s total installed power generation capacity during the 2025-26 fiscal year. As it stands, India’s total installed power generation capacity has reached 520,510.95 MW, which consists of 248,541.62 MW from fossil fuels and 271,969.33 MW from non-fossil fuel sources, including nuclear energy. This significant growth in power generation capacity is indicative of India’s ongoing efforts to meet its energy demands while promoting cleaner energy sources to combat climate change. The government’s initiatives in the renewable energy sector have been pivotal in achieving these milestones, positioning India as a global leader in sustainable energy development. As the country continues to invest in and expand its energy infrastructure, it is well on its way to securing a sustainable energy future while supporting economic growth and development across various sectors.
