Ixigo Acquires 60% Stake in Spain’s Train Booking Platform Trenes for €11.70 Million to Expand European Market Reach

Travel aggregator Ixigo has made a significant move in the European online travel market by approving the acquisition of a 60 percent stake in Spain’s second-largest train booking platform, Online Travel Solutions (Trenes), for €11.70 million (over ₹125 crore). This strategic acquisition positions Ixigo to capitalize on its strengths in product development, technology, and artificial intelligence, enabling it to enhance its offerings in the online travel agency (OTA) sector across Europe. Trenes specializes in providing an online platform for train ticket bookings, primarily serving the Spanish market while also extending its services to other regions in Southern Europe. Following the acquisition, Online Travel Solutions, S.L. will operate as a step-down subsidiary of Ixigo, as confirmed in a regulatory filing released late Friday. In addition to this acquisition, Ixigo’s board of directors also sanctioned the purchase of a 45.02 percent stake in Squad As Service, S.L. (Sqaas) in Spain, with a total investment of €0.45 million (over ₹4.83 crore). The total financial outlay for both acquisitions encompasses non-compete fees and the authorization of the respective signatories. This strategic expansion into the European market underscores Ixigo’s commitment to growth and innovation in the travel technology space, leveraging its AI capabilities to improve user experience and streamline operations.
