The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is currently investigating allegations of cartelisation among steel manufacturers, as confirmed by the Corporate Affairs Ministry on Monday. The ministry has disclosed that the investigation report has been disseminated to the relevant parties, allowing them to submit their objections and suggestions in line with the stipulations of the Competition Act, 2002. In a formal written response to the Lok Sabha, Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that the CCI has initiated 54 cases related to anti-competitive practices and received 149 merger and acquisition (M&A) filings in 2025 alone. This particular case concerning potential cartel behaviour among steel producers was registered following directives from the Madras High Court. The CCI’s Director General has completed the investigation and submitted the report, which is now under review by the involved parties. They have been instructed to respond within the framework provided by the competition law, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal protocols in the inquiry process. As the landscape of competition law evolves in India, the actions taken by the CCI reflect a robust commitment to maintaining fair market practices and curbing anti-competitive behaviour across various sectors, including the steel industry. The ongoing investigation could have significant implications for market dynamics, regulatory compliance, and the future operations of steel manufacturers in India. The CCI’s efforts underscore the importance of upholding competitive integrity in the marketplace, which is vital for fostering innovation, consumer protection, and economic growth. The outcomes of this inquiry may set precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future, thereby shaping the regulatory environment for businesses in India.
