CCI Investigates Alleged Steel Cartel; Parties Invited to Submit Objections in Compliance with Competition Law

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is currently investigating allegations of cartelization among steel manufacturers, a significant issue that has raised concerns regarding anti-competitive practices within the industry. On Monday, the corporate affairs ministry announced that the investigation report has been disseminated to the involved parties, allowing them to submit their objections and suggestions in line with the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002. In a detailed written response to the Lok Sabha, Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed that the CCI had registered a total of 54 cases concerning anti-competitive practices and received 149 merger and acquisition (M&A) filings in the year 2025. This indicates a proactive approach by the CCI in monitoring and regulating market practices to ensure fair competition. The case regarding the alleged cartelization of steel manufacturers was initiated following directives from the Madras High Court, highlighting the judiciary’s role in addressing competition law violations. After a thorough investigation conducted by CCI’s Director General, the findings have been formally communicated to the relevant stakeholders, who are now expected to respond with their viewpoints. This ongoing inquiry underscores the CCI’s commitment to enforcing competition law and maintaining a level playing field in the Indian market. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the steel industry and may influence future regulatory actions. As the CCI continues to scrutinize anti-competitive behaviors, it reinforces the importance of compliance with competition regulations among businesses operating in India.
