The financial performance of Indian airlines during the last fiscal year reveals a staggering cumulative loss of Rs 5,289.73 crore, with the Air India Group alone contributing a significant Rs 9,808.12 crore to this total, according to official data released by the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha. The report highlights a mixed landscape in the aviation sector, where out of the 11 airlines operating in the market, only four managed to report profits. Notably, IndiGo emerged as the standout performer with a remarkable profit of Rs 7,253.30 crore, followed by Blue Dart, Star Air, and IndiaOne Air, which reported profits of Rs 0.71 crore, Rs 68.75 crore, and Rs 0.33 crore, respectively. On the other hand, the financial struggles of several airlines were starkly evident, with Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express incurring losses of Rs 3,975.75 crore and Rs 5,832.37 crore, respectively. New entrant Akasa Air also faced challenges, reporting a loss of Rs 1,986.25 crore. Additionally, state-owned Alliance Air recorded a loss of Rs 691.12 crore, while SpiceJet’s losses stood at Rs 55.67 crore. Other operators experiencing losses included Fly91, which reported Rs 67.65 crore in losses, and Quikjet Cargo with a minor loss of Rs 1.34 crore. The financial health of the Indian aviation sector has come under scrutiny as these figures illustrate the ongoing challenges faced by carriers in a highly competitive market. While the profitability of a few airlines provides a glimmer of hope, the overall landscape underscores the need for strategic reforms and operational efficiencies to enhance the financial viability of the industry. As the Indian aviation market continues to evolve, stakeholders must focus on addressing the issues that have led to significant losses, particularly in state-owned enterprises, to sustain growth and ensure a robust recovery in the post-pandemic era. With the aviation sector being a crucial component of India’s economy, fostering a healthy competitive environment will be vital for the long-term sustainability and profitability of Indian airlines.
