India’s Civil Aviation Minister Initiates Study to Address Height Restrictions for Airport Surroundings Amid Rapid Aviation Growth

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced on Friday that a comprehensive study is underway in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to explore viable solutions addressing height restrictions on buildings surrounding airports. India, recognized as one of the fastest-growing civil aviation markets globally, currently boasts 165 operational airports, with projections indicating the establishment of an additional 50 airports over the next five years. As real estate development accelerates across the country, stringent height restrictions have been implemented around airports to ensure the safety and efficiency of flight operations. Speaking at the National Urban and Real Estate Development Conclave 2026, organized by the National Real Estate Development Council (Naredco) in New Delhi, Minister Naidu emphasized the importance of the ongoing study in light of the civil aviation sector’s rapid expansion. He pointed out that height restrictions pose significant challenges, particularly in major metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai, where urban development is both critical and complex.
