Piyush Goyal to Meet Export Councils on Feb 11 as India Secures Key Trade Agreement with US and EU

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to convene a crucial meeting with representatives from various export promotion councils and industry associations on February 11 in New Delhi, as India moves towards finalizing significant trade agreements with the United States and the European Union. This meeting comes at a pivotal time, following the recent establishment of a framework aimed at signing the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement between India and the US. Under this new trade framework, the United States has committed to reducing the reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%. This development follows the US’s decision to eliminate the punitive 25% tariffs on Indian imports, which were introduced in August of the previous year in response to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. The Indian export community is particularly optimistic about these negotiations, as the US remains the largest export market for several labor-intensive sectors, including textiles, leather, footwear, and gems and jewelry. These sectors have faced significant challenges due to steep tariffs, which had risen to as high as 50%, adversely affecting India’s export capabilities to the US market. The upcoming meeting is expected to address the concerns of exporters who have been eagerly anticipating the positive outcomes of these trade discussions. Industry officials have indicated that all export promotion councils will be in attendance, highlighting the importance of collaborative dialogue in facilitating smoother trade relations. As India seeks to enhance its trade ties with major economies, the implications of these negotiations are likely to be far-reaching, impacting not only export growth but also broader economic relations between India and the US, as well as the EU. Stakeholders are hopeful that this meeting will pave the way for more favorable trade conditions, ultimately benefiting Indian exporters and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
